Coronavirus Lockdown:Pollution Level Is Reducing And River Ganga Becoming Cleaner

Whole India is locked inside their houses under the nationwide lockdown declared by our honourable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi on March 24, 2020.

Amid lockdown, the pollution level in different cities has reduced to a significant level. Cities are experiencing clean air, clear blue skies. India's capital city, Delhi, has also witnessed reduction in the Air pollution level. There are also signs of improved air quality in the cities like Varanasi and Kanpur.

River Ganga
River Ganges or Ganga, that originates from Himalaya in Uttarakhand and flows through many cities, has also become cleaner due to the nationwide lockdown. The main pollutants for contaminating the river were the industrial harmful waste and sewage from hotels, dharmashalas and lodges. But due to lockdown, industries are shut, pilgrims are not visiting river bank for rituals,  no tourist activities has led to auto purification of the river.

As per Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), dissolved oxygen level of River Ganga has also improved making it suitable for bathing. The river has dissolved oxygen level upstream 8.9 mg per litre while in the downstream it is 8.3 mg per litre. Healthy water has dissolved oxygen level of at least 7 mg/litre.

According to the observation made by BD Joshi, Environmental Scientist and Ex-professor at the Gurukul Kangri University, Ganga water has become clean and fit for drinking in Haridwar and Rishikesh.  River Ganga is showing significant difference in the quality of water from past years, according to Ganga Sabha General Secretary, Tanmay Vashishth.
River Yamuna
Not only River Ganga, but the ancient River Yamuna in Delhi has also become clean in the absence of industrial effluents.

From the past many years, various campaigns have been started by the Government of India and different NGO's to clean the Holy River of our Nation. But in these many years, none of them were able to clean the river to this level that this 21 days lockdown has did.

In the current situation full of negativity, nature is still spreading positivity.
