Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj:An Inspiration To Every Indian!

Every year, February 19 is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the greatest Maratha Emperor Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Born on February 19, 1630, at Shivneri Fort, Shivaji Maharaj is known for his legendary acts of bravery to protect the cultural and religious ethos of India.

There are number of stories famous for his bravery, courage and strength. Shivaji Maharaj was the member of Bhonsle Maratha dynasty and was the son of Shahaji Bhonsle and Jijabai. He was the one who formed the territory from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that led to the dawn of the Maratha Empire. During the establishment of Maratha Empire, Shivaji Maharaj conquered and built around 400 forts that includes Raigad, Pratapgad, Lohgad, Shivneri, Purandar, Sindhudurg, Panhala, Sinhagad forts.

At the very small age of 16, he seized the Toma fort. By the age of 17, he had taken hold of the Raigad and Kondana forts. He was crowned as the Chatrapati(Emperor) of the Maratha realm in 1674. The coronation ceremony took place ar Raigad fort. He promoted Marathi ans Sanskrti language to be used, rather than Persian language at that time, in court and administration. He was truly an incarnation of bravery, leadership and statesmanship.

The year 2020 marks his 390th birth anniversary. The celebration for this day was first started in Pune in 1870 by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. He wrote the longest and the first Ballad on Shivaji Maharaja's life. Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti had a vital role during India’s freedom struggle movement. Bal Gangadhar Tilak used this occassion to unite people during the Brirish period. This day is celebrated with enthusiasm in the Indian State of Maharashtra.
