Chemistry and Literature 2019 Nobel announced

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been given to John D. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino for the development of lithium-ion batteries. Literature 2019 Nobel has been awarded to Peter Handke for an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience. 2018 postpones Nobel has been given to Polish author Olga Tokarczuk for for a narrative imagination that with encyclopaedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life.

Lithium-ion batteries have a huge application in our day to day life, from mobile phones to laptops and electric vehicles. Dr. Whittingham developed the first functional lithium battery in early 1970's. Dr. Goodenough doubled the lithium battery’s potential, making it a more powerful and useful battery. Dr. Yoshino eliminated the use of pure lithium from the battery. Instead of pure lithium, which is harmful as well,  he used lithium ions making it safer to use.

The resulting lightweightbattery can be charged hundred of times. It is also capable of stoting solar and wind energy. For appreciating the contribution of these three scientists, they have been awarded by 2019 Nobel.

Dr. Goodenough, who is 97 years old, is the oldest person to receive the Nobel Prize till date.

All the winners would be receiving the awards and the cash prize worth approximately US$ 1.1million on Deccember 10, 2019, the death anniversary of the founder of the Nobel Prize,  Alfred Nobel.
