2019 Nobel prize announced for Pyschology or Medicine and Physics

The Nobel Prize for the year 2019 in Psychology or medicine has been awarded jointly to William G. Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza. They have been awarded for thier discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. Similarly, the Nobel Prize 2019 in Physics has been awarded to cosmology and exoplanet researchers, James Peebles, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for their study to improve the understanding of evolution of universe and Earth’s place in the cosmos.

The Nobel Prize is the most prestigious international award by Swedish and Norwegian Instituions for academic, cultural and scientific research. The five nobel prizes were established in 1895 out of the will of the Swedish chemist, engineer and industrialist Alfred Nobel. The five nobel prize categories are Chemistry, Literature, Peace, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine. Out of this Peace nobel prize is given in Norway and the other four are given in Sweden.

The nobel prize consists of a diploma, medal, and cash award. The Nobel Foundation decides each year the cash prize to be awarded to each Nobel laureate. The cash prize is about US$1.1 million or 7,83,39,250.00 INR. The medal is 18 karats green gold plated with 24 karats pure gold.

This year's winners research in medicine explains the oxygen-sensitive processes and their effect on cancers, heart attacks and strokes. Human body is made up of tiny cells and how these cells react in the presence of different level of oxygen in the body has been explained by them. This study will further help to find new strategies to fight anemia, cancer and many other diseases.

For the winners in Physics, one half of the award is given to James Peebles for his theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology and the other half is given jointly to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for their discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star.
