Statue of Unity enters the esteemed World Architecture News Award 2019

The World's tallest Statue- Statue of Unity, has entered in the Mixed Use category for the 2019 World Architecture News(WAN) Award. The statue is located on a river island named Sadhu Bet, facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam on River Narmada, 100 km from Vadodara in Gujarat, India.

The World Architecture News Awards is one of the world’s prestigious awards in architecture and depicts the best architectural designs all over the world.

The Statue of Unity depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the most eminent leaders of India and the first Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was responsible for the integration of hundreds of princely states into the modern Republic of India. It is the tallest statue in the world at 182 meters. The second tallest statue in the world is the Spring Temple Buddha in China's Henan province which is at 128 meters and the third tallest is the Statue of Liberty at 93 meters.

According to the World Architecture News, the statue of Unity is capable of withstanding extremely high-speed winds and an Earthquake of 6.8 at the Richter scale. It is constructed by Larsen & Turbo Limited(L&T) from 2013 to 2018. It was inaugurated by India's  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 October 2018 on the occasion of the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.

There is a gallery for the visitors at the statue's chest level at 135 meters,  that offers a complete view of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the surrounding area including Vindhya and Satpura hills and Narmada valley. According to the World Architecture News website, the statue will generate around 15,000 direct jobs every year in tourism and allied sectors for tribal people.

The statue is even visible from the Space. Planet Labs, the world's leading commercial satellite network, released a satellite image of Statue of Unity in November 2018.
