Menstrual Hygiene Day #ItsTimeForAction

Knowing that the Menstrual cycles are an important part of a healthy biological process in a girls life, it is always seen as a Taboo topic which leads to hesitation and incomplete information about its hygiene. There are various cultural, religious and traditional beliefs and myths associated with the menstrual cycles that restrict the women's and the girls in the backward regions to express their problems during their cycles. Because of the lack of proper hygiene, a number of women's and girls suffers from life taking diseases.

In order to spread awareness of the importance of good Menstrual Hygiene Management(MHM), Menstrual Hygiene Day is started. It is celebrated annually and was initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United. In 2013, WASH United started a 28-day Social Media Campaign on Twitter, #MENSTRAVAGANZA, to let people know about the importance of the MHM and later they decide to create a global awareness day to educate people on this topic. On May 28, 2014, people around the world celebrated the Menstrual Hygiene Day with speeches, rallies, workshops, etc. Later, more and more people joined and supported this campaign.

There is a significance of selecting May 28 as Menstrual Hygiene Day. 28 signifies the average length of the Menstrual Cycle. May is the 5th month of the year, which in this case signifies the avarage days for which the cycle lasts.

There are various issues prevailing over the world for the girls and the women of menstruating age. They are not provided with the toilets, no privacy for the MHM, no access to soap and the clean water. Such poor MHM affects Reproductive Tract Infections(RTI). RTI is a major problem in India due to lack of good MHM and no proper treatment.

We should create an environment wherein we can welcome discussion and educate girls in the backward regions on such topics. Menstrual hygiene materials and sanitization facilities should be made available to the girls around the world. This can be achieved through proper awareness and information. For this, Menstrual Hygiene Day acts as a global platform to publicize the information through various campaigns on social media.
