International Worker's Day 2019 : Know the origin of the day

The theme of Labour Day 2019 is "Uniting Worker's for Social and Economic Advancement".

International Worker's Day is observed on May 01 every year. It is also known as Labour Day, Worker's Day or May Day in different countries. This day marks the celebration of Labour and the working classes and is started by the International Labour Movement.

It is national, public holiday in many countries on this day while some countries celebrates this day on some other significant day like the United States and Canada celebrates Labour Day on the first Monday of September. This day has different stories in different countries.

Worker's day originates from the eight-hour day movement in the 19th Century, which demanded eights hours of work per day. At that time, working situation was very vulnerable and the workers had to work 12-16 hours a day. In 1884, the American Federation of Labor passed a resolution that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labor from and after 1st May, 1886". Several workers joined the movement by 1886 and went on strike for eight hours of workday. Later on May 04 1886, a bomb was thrown in Chicago's Haymarket by a revolutionist, in which many people died and several were injured. Five years later, labour day is observed as a day to pay homage to the contributions of the workers.

In India, this day is celebrated as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din.
