Chandrayaan 2 : ISRO to launch the lunar mission by July 2019

Chandrayaan-2 is planned to be launched to the Moon between July 09, 2019 to July 16, 2019. Chandrayaan-2 is a second moon vehicle for exploring moon which is developed by ISRO(Indian Space Research Organization) after Chandrayan-1.

The mission includes a lunar orbiter, lander(Vikram) and rover(Pragyan). For Chandrayaan-2, all the payloads are developed by India. It will be launched by Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III(GSLV MkIII), one of the strongest rocket of ISRO. The mission duration is predicted to be one year for the orbiter, about 15 days for the lander and about 15 days for the rover.

The orbiter will launch the lander on the Moon and the rover will then move on the surface of the moon and will do the on-site surface analysis. The orbiter will move around the orbit and will transfer the data collected by the rover to the ISRO station. The successful Charadrayaan-2 mission will make India as the 4th country in the world, after the United States(US), the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics(USSR) and China, to soft-land on the moon.

Prior to this mission, India has launched Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2008, but the mission was stopped after 392 days due to lack of fuel. In November 2007, ISRO and the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) signed an agreement to launch together with the Chandrayan-2 project. The lander for the project was decided to be provided by the Roscosmos and the orbiter and rover to be provided by India. India developed the payload by 2013 but Russia failed to provide the lander on time and the project got delayed. Later in 2015, Russia declared his inability to provide the lander and India decided to develop the payload by themselves.

Now, the payloads are ready to test and the mission is expected to launch in July 2019. ISRO has expected the Moon to be at a distance of 3,63,726 km from the Earth around July 09-July 16, 2019. Chandrayaan-2 is expected to land the moon surface near the lunar south pole on September 06, 2019.
