Mahaveer Jayanti 2019:Know why this day is celebrated!!

Mahaveer Janma Kalyanak or Mahaveer Jayanti is celebrated on the occasion of birth anniversary of Lord Mahaveer. He was the twenty-fourth and the last Tirthankara(saviour or spiritual teacher) of Avarsarpini(Jain Community). This day occur either in the month of March or April, as it is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the month Chaitra in the year 599 BCE. This year it will be celebrated on April 17, 2019. The Jain community celebrates this day with great enthusiasm.

Lord Mahaveer was born in Bihar into Ikshvaku dynasty as the son of King Siddhartha of Kundagrama and Queen Trishala. He was named 'Vardhamana'(one who grows). He took over the kingdom after his father. After 30 years of age, he gave up his kingdom and all the comforts of his life to gain knowledge. After meditating for twelve and a half years, he gained control over his mind. This is the reson people gave him the name 'Mahaveer'. Later he founded the religion Jainism on the values of non-violence, love and respect.

Celebration for this day varies between the Jains across the world. People visit temples of Lord Mahaveer on this day. The idol of Mahaveer is given ceremonial bath(Abhisheka) and then carried on a chariot in a Rath Yatra(procession). The priest and the followers chant bhajans. As food is the important attraction for the festival, the Jains takes only Satvik Bhojan(food), without onion and garlic. The moto behind this is to have healthy food with less harm to the living creatures. The followers of Jainim also participate in different social activities on this day.

Ahinsa Sthal, a Jain temple in Mehrauli of Delhi is dedicated to Lord Mahaveer. It has 13 feet 6 inches tall statue of Lord Mahaveer which is carved out of a granite rock in a Lotus position. Many people visits this temple on Mahaveer Jayanti.
