Observed on 2nd Thursday of March every year, World Kidney Day is a global awareness campaign. It focuses on the importance of Kidney and the health problems related to it. This year it was on March 14,  2019.
Protein is a crucial macronutrient of every cell in the body. It is considered as an important building block of bones, muscles, skin and blood. It helps in building and repairing tissues and thus helps in smooth functioning of organs. It also helps to lose weight.

But as the saying goes, 'Excess of anything is bad', it is no exception for protein also. It has been warned that excess intake of protein can harm the kidneys.  Kidneys are important for filtering blood in the body. It filters about half cup of blood every minute. It removes the wastes and acids produced by the cells of the body through urine.

The kidneys have to work hard to remove the protein from the body. The excess consumption of high protein diet can increase the burden on kidney. This can affect the proper functioning of removing the wastes from the body. This can lead to weakness, nausea and severe kidney disease.

Ideally, we need 0.8 gram of protein/kg of body weight. The recommended daily amount of protein is 56 grams for the average man and 46 grams for the average woman. But nowadays, in order to loose weight people are increasing their protein intake, which will affect their body functioning in long run.
